Ayoni is from Barbados, following Rihanna’s footsteps while reaching for the same stars. Atlanta's DaVionne got a break collaborating with known artists and now works on her writing and recording. Chicago-born Jean Deaux does it all on her own — writing, recording, and producing while touring with successful acts. The audience is taken on a journey with these young women — from performing on the road to intimate sessions at the camp — and they hear from professional mentors, including Keys, as they share their ambitions and challenges. DaVionne, Ayoni and Jean have hopes of breaking into the music industry. They are all attendees at the songwriting camp created by singer-songwriter Alicia Keys in partnership with her Jungle City Studios cofounder Ann Mincielli, Jody Gerson, head of Universal Music Publishing group, and Sam Kirby of UTA (formerly WME). The camp was conceived in 2018, following a USC Annenberg study that revealed the small number of females involved in the business of making music. Women comprise just two percent of the vast industry behind the song – from songwriters to producers and engineers. The number is halved when focussed solely on women of colour.
